Ik heb altijd een zwak voor eenvoudige films. Niet teveel poespas, een decor, wat acteurs en draaien maar. En zo komt Phone Booth (2002) op me over. Goede acteurs (onder andere Colin Farrell), een eenvoudige plek (een telefooncel) en niet teveel special effects en andersoortige afleiding. Joel Schumacher heeft er op die manier een eenvoudige, maar spannende thriller van weten te maken.
Negentig procent van Phone Booth speelt zich af terwijl Stu Sheperd (Colin Farrell) aan
de telefoon hangt. Hij blijft daar zo lang hangen, omdat hij onder schot wordt gehouden door een persoon (Kiefer Sutherland, of liever de Stem van Kiefer Sutherland) die alles van hem schijnt te weten. Hij weet dat Sheperd iedereen manipuleert, dat hij zijn vriendin bedriegt en zijn scharrel elke dag belt vanuit de telefooncel waar hij op dit moment in staat. Het lijkt snel gedaan met dit verhaal, maar de volle 77 minuten zijn spannend. Door middel van slow-motion, snelle editing en split-screen neemt Schumacher je mee naar die telefooncel op de hoek van de straat. Heel knap, als je bedenkt dat de film in 12 dagen is opgenomen. Phone Booth moest zijn releasedatum trouwens uitstellen omdat rond de premiere in Washington een sluipschutter ronddwaalde met zijn sniper-rifle.
De moeite waard om te bekijken, Phone Booth, om 20:30 op RTL 5.
